'Play with Me' at 69 Smith Street Gallery, 69 Smith Street, Fitzroy.
'Play with Me' is the latest offering of sculpture, video installation and photography work by artists Cecilia Fogelberg, Ulrika Holmlund and Marian Tubbs at 69 Smith Street Gallery in Fitzroy. The exhibition aims to investigate the female body by exploring identity, gender politics and cultural traditions.
In an interactive video construction Ulrika Holmlund invites the viewer to intimately participate with the work. By using cultural constructions of sexuality and voyeurism Holmlund's installation evoke adolescent dreams and cultural patterns.
Cecilia Fogelberg's sculptural works questions cultural trends with a humour and a twist. Her sculptures play with our physical appearance to explore gender based roles that are taught to us through characters in fairytales.
Marian Tubbs investigates how disparate notions of Australian identity are bound to the beach in a collection of new photographic work. The artist makes marks of the body on the shoreline to produce her quiet and stirring images.
2006 June 21- July 1
'Girls on Video' at First Site Gallery, 344 Swanston Street, Melbourne.
As part of External Artists Program
The exhibition is really threefold in meaning. Firstly it is a bad take on the smash hit single, Girls on Film from Duran Duran's self-titled album of 1981, secondly the work exhibited is of young women on video and thirdly the exhibition aims to illustarate contemporary feminist perspectives on video art practise.
